BEAUMANOR HALL TRIP!

Today we visited Beaumanor Hall for our fantastic Victorian day experience. It was so much fun! The children looked brilliant dressed up as Victorians!

We experienced a Victorian school classroom with a Victorian teacher and then life as a servant below stairs.

We also had a delicious Victorian lunch, had a look inside Beaumanor Hall at the grand staircase and explored the beautiful grounds.

A terrific day was had by all the children and adults!

Have a look at some of our photos below:

Using ink pens to practise copper plate handwriting

We really concentrated!

We pumped water to fill the dolly tubs to wash the clothes

We learnt about Victorian clothes

Here we had to iron the clean clothes using the old irons!

Thank you to all of KS1 for such a super day!

26/4/13

This week we have been learning about Victorian schools and also working children.

Our class have been fascinated learning about the types of jobs poor Victorian children had to do, like chimney sweeping and dangerous factory work!

They also couldn't believe the punishments children would get at school for doing little things like muttering, or being lazy! We had a look at some original punishment books and also learnt about the Dunces hat. All the children said they are pleased they are at school nowadays and not then! I agree!

When we visit Beaumanor Hall we will experience a lesson in a Victorian school whereby we will practise handwriting with ink pens and also maths on slate with chalk. We will also experience life as a working servant! We will even have a Victorian packed lunch... we can't wait!

8/14/13

This half term we are learning all about the Victorians! Today we started to learn about Queen Victoria...

This afternoon we went to the ICT suite and researched lots of facts about Queen Victoria by going on the Woodlands Junior Kent website. Here is the link:

http://www.chiddingstone.kent.sch.uk/homework/victorians/victoria.htm

Once we had found our favourite fact, we then re-wrote this fact in to Word, followed by an image of Queen Victoria which we copied and inserted in to the Word document.

Here are some of our favourite facts:

  • We couldn't believe that she had 9 children, 40 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren!
  • She was also made Queen at the age of 18 years old and reigned for 63 years!
  • Her first language was German, but by the age of 3 years old she was already learning English and French.
